Where are you from?
Franklin, Massachusetts
When did you start diving and why?
I got my Open Water certification in August 2013. I was stationed in Okinawa in the Marine Corps at the time and my wife wanted us to get certified so she could see the USS Emmons, a WW2 wreck from the Battle of Okinawa off the coast of Nago.
What was/is your favorite PADI course/why is it your favorite?
I would have to say the Rescue Diver course because it teaches you how to be the best dive buddy you can in the worst of circumstances.
What is your favorite dive site/destination? Is there someplace you hope to go that you haven't yet?
Toilet Bowl in Okinawa is my favorite site. My favorite dive destination is Cozumel for its amazingly clear water and relaxed pace for drifting along. A location I hope to go to someday soon is Bonfire, a true shore divers paradise.
What is your favorite skill to teach students? What is your favorite part of being a PADI professional?
I have to group this one to any skills that contribute to proper buoyancy because it is such a big part of being comfortable in the water and having a positive experience. My favorite part about being a PADI professional is the ability to have a positive impact on the experience of students.
What do you do outside of the water (day job and/or hobbies)?
For my day job, I am a Social Worker. My non-scuba hobbies include target shooting, relaxing with my family, and traveling.
Why did you chose Deep Sea Scuba as your scuba home?
I took a course through Deep Sea Scuba and was impressed with the selection of gear in stock and the scuba knowledge that Dave has.
What advice would you give to anyone interested or learning to dive?
  1. Have confidence in yourself and your abilities. Don’t approach getting certified or trying scuba with an “I can’t” attitude or you never will.
  2. Don’t get sticker shock. Diving is not as expensive as many believe it is today and the gear that may seem expensive up front will last you a long time if you take care of it.

PADI Course Director

Where are you from?
Chicago Illinois
When did you start diving and why?
Started in the 60s for a chance to explore all the lakes and ponds in the area. We never had much training and no partners, but sure had fun. When I got to the local college I was teaching SCUBA and that was cool. The school was paying me!
What was/is your favorite PADI course/why is it your favorite?
I love the wreck diver classes and am still fascinated diving wrecks and exploring them. I still hope to find that bi treasure chest!!
What is your favorite dive site/destination? Is there someplace you hope to go that you haven't yet?
I find any time I can explore the ocean is fantastic. Each area has so much to offer, I Always look forward to going back, and seeing what has changed. I would hate to limit myself to one spot being the best, I am fascinated diving the great lakes, and with so much history and so many wrecks, one never knows what they will find. I want to dive the North Pacific and see the wolf eels and other odd ball critters.
What is your favorite skill to teach students? What is your favorite part of being a PADI professional?
I love teaching navigation, I get excited when a student comes back to very close to where they started from. My favorite part of being a PADI PRO, is having the opportunity to turn people on to the fantastic career I have been given. I also love sharing my experiences with other Pros.
What do you do outside of the water (day job and/or hobbies)?
My day job is teaching people how to get away from their work, and exploring part of the planet very few people ever see. I love to play golf when I am not diving.
Why did you chose Deep Sea Scuba as your scuba home?
I like the staff, and the professional attitude one can find there.
What advice would you give to anyone interested or learning to dive?
DON’T WAIT!

Tristin Litherland

Senior PADI Divemaster
Swim Instructor

Where are you from?
I’m originally from Indiana. I’ve lived in Phoenix for about 17 years. I currently live in Goodyear, AZ.
When did you start diving and why?
I got my certification in 2014. I was on a snorkeling trip and the reef was about 30 ft. down and I remember thinking, “I would rather be down there”.
What was/is your favorite PADI course/why is it your favorite?
Rescue Diver. It is a very fulfilling certification. Being a Rescue Diver gives you more confidence in the water. It prepares you to deal with potential problems while diving as well as Emergency First Response and CPR that you can use in everyday life.
What is your favorite dive site/destination? Is there someplace you hope to go that you haven't yet?
That’s a tough one. I love swimming with sharks, so I would have to say Moorea, Tahiti. I definitely want to go to the Galápagos Islands.
What is your favorite skill to teach students? What is your favorite part of being a PADI professional?
My favorite skill to teach is the fin pivot and hover for buoyancy control. Neutral buoyancy underwater is a tough skill to master. Being neutrally buoyant allows you to glide through the water effortlessly, which allows you to conserve air, thus leading to longer bottom times. It also makes underwater photography easier. Overall, it makes diving more enjoyable. Also, being able to teach the skills that I learned and passing on my education to new divers.
What do you do outside of the water (day job and/or hobbies)?
I am a Ballpark Foreman at Goodyear Ballpark. I maintain the stadium field. I am married and have two boys, 10 and 9. I am a huge sports fan. Baseball first then everything else after that.
Why did you chose Deep Sea Scuba as your scuba home?
I chose Deep Sea Scuba because I really enjoy the family atmosphere. Everyone is courteous and kind.
What advice would you give to anyone interested or learning to dive?
Too much to write. I’ll keep it simple and say, you won’t regret it!
